How To Find Something To Wear

  • #1

Howdy all,

For the construction "observe something (to exist) + adjective", is the "to exist" optional?

e.g. You take given me the same reply, which I still find (to be) unclear.
e.thou. I discover your behaviour (to be) unacceptable.

Many thank you! :)

Howdy.

Is the "was" optional in the post-obit sentence?

I found taking a warm bath was relaxing.

Thanks a lot!

My guess hither:

I found taking a warm bath was relaxing. = I found that taking a warm bath was relaxing. = I discovered that taking a warm bathroom was relaxing.

I found taking a warm bath relaxing. = In my opinion, taking a warm bathroom was relaxing.

Waiting for a native speaker to ostend the above. :)

Thanks a lot, merely my question is: Is the "was" optional in the following sentence? I found taking a warm bath was relaxing.

[i] I plant taking a warm bath relaxing.
[ii] I found taking a warm bath was relaxing.

Grammatically, I'd say that [1] is correct. Directly objects are virtually always noun phrases, just uncommonly at that place are grounds for saying that "taking a warm bath" is directly object of "establish", and "relaxing" is objective predicative complement.

[ii] is strictly speaking incorrect because gerund-participial (ing) clauses do non role as complement to the verb "find".

Their big ears were pricked, and one of them artsy its head as if it found me to exist deeply puzzling, an stance of me that is not limited to coyotes.

I think under this circumstance, "to be" is necessary. Without "to be", "deeply" seems to alter the "found".
